Designing for the Indonesian MSME: What We Learned
## The MSME Opportunity Indonesia has 64 million micro, small, and medium enterprises. Yet most digital tools are designed for urban, tech-literate users. This is both a problem and a massive opportunity. ## Three Key Insights **1. Trust before features.** MSME owners are cautious. Your first UX job is to signal safety, not sell capability. **2. Bandwidth is a constraint, not a preference.** Design for 3G. Compress every image. Defer every non-critical script. **3. Bahasa matters.** Not just language — tone, formality, and even emoji use vary dramatically across regions. ## Practical Takeaways - Test with real MSME owners in tier 2 and 3 cities - Prioritise voice interfaces for lower-literacy users - Build forgiveness into every flow
